A winding road through misty green mountains in Hà Giang, Vietnam

Two weeks on the Hà Giang Loop

6 min readHà Giang, Vietnam

Limestone karsts, a rented Honda Win, and a hard rule about never riding after dark. Booking the flights this week.

Northern Vietnam in November: dry season, cold mornings, and the rice terraces past their best but the light at its absolute finest. I will take that trade.

The one rule

No riding after dark. Not a preference — a rule. The passes are unlit, the switchbacks are unforgiving, and the trucks do not expect you. Everything else about this trip is negotiable.

  • Hà Giang → Yên Minh → Đồng Văn → Mèo Vạc → back the long way
  • Homestays only, booked no more than a day ahead
  • A semi-automatic, not a manual — I am not proud
  • Two spare days for weather, which I will absolutely need
The Mã Pí Lèng pass is 20 km long and I intend to spend most of a day on it.

If you have done this loop and have a homestay you would defend to strangers, I want to hear about it.
